Trauma and PTSD

2338427187As the saying goes, “I get you.”

“What is wrong with me?” You can’t remember anyone’s name. Numbers have also become difficult for you to remember. Each day is spent looking for things that could go wrong, things to solve, and taking the word proactive to a new level. Productivity is your new safe place but has robbed you of your life.

Flashbacks, nightmares, or intrusive thoughts about a traumatic event keep cycling through your mind – making it feel like it is happening now. Having a good night’s sleep seems impossible because you can’t quiet your brain at night, and when you open your eyes, you are like a racehorse ready to take on the billions of things on your list.

At restaurants, you sit with your back to the wall, feeling uneasy in crowds. It is hard to settle down because you always feel tense and on edge and sometimes have angry outbursts.

It is hard to put yourself first because it feels selfish. You feel detached from loved ones and can’t express your emotions or sadness because what’s the point? Therefore, you need to keep moving at any cost. Early on, you decided that pushing away bad feelings and hard memories was the only way to stay focused, but now, you can’t remember other things.

Life for you is a quiet battle.

Inside yourself, the battle rages.

You are beginning to recognize that something is wrong, and that’s the first step to fixing what’s not working.

Although you have tried to read about ways to provide self-help, nothing seems to work.

Even though you have endured these traumatic events alone, you can’t heal that way. Maybe you need to do this with a professional.

2374001373A happier version of you is just around the corner.

There’s a way to live without this pain and constant stress and be free from intrusive thoughts. You can see a world where you feel a sense of calm and safety, no longer constantly on alert or feeling threatened.

Through therapy, you can find an emotional balance to help you engage with the present moment, experience a clearer mind, and achieve more emotional stability. Without feeling hypervigilant or anxious about potential danger, you can relax in everyday situations and hopefully sleep soundly through the night. Instead of withdrawing or feeling detached, you could enjoy healthy, fulfilling relationships, share emotional closeness with family, friends, and colleagues, and feel connected to others again.

After working together in therapy, you will experience a broader range of emotions, including joy, excitement, and contentment, without being overshadowed by feelings of fear or numbness.

A life free of symptoms will allow you to fully engage in life, pursue personal goals, and embrace opportunities without the constant reminder of past trauma.

Overall, it would be a life with a sense of freedom from emotional pain’s grip, where you feel safe, connected, and empowered to live with hope and possibility.

In the time we’ll spend together…

I will use various therapeutic approaches to help you overcome obstacles, choosing the therapy to help a specific symptom. The names aren’t necessary, but here are some methods I use to provide you with a framework for my work.

  • Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) focuses on building psychological flexibility and helping you live a meaningful life despite your trauma. It empowers you to act toward healing and personal growth.
  • Narrative Therapy will empower you to reframe your experiences, externalize your problems, and construct new, healing, and preferred stories to address guilt and shame.
  • Neuro-Linguistic Programming focuses on understanding the relationship between thoughts, language, and behavior to help you reframe your experiences, change unhelpful patterns, and develop healthier responses.
  • Object Relations Therapy provides you with a framework for understanding and addressing your trauma by exploring how early relational experiences shaped your internal world and your response to trauma.
  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) helps you focus on your strengths, resources, and actionable steps toward recovery rather than revising the trauma itself would be used.
  • Strengths-Based Therapy (SBT) emphasizes one’s inherent abilities, potential for growth, and natural resilience.
  • Structural Family Therapy reorganizes family structures and improves communication to create a supportive environment that fosters healing and resilience.
  • Trauma-Focused Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) is designed to help you by addressing the impact of trauma on your thoughts, feelings, and behaviors, promoting healing and recovery.
  • Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) combined with tapping (a.k.a. Emotional Freedom Techniques) can help alleviate emotional distress and calm the nervous system, allowing you to relax your mind and heal from trauma. Lastly,
  • Gestalt Therapy focuses on increasing awareness, integrating past experiences, and fostering a sense of presence in the here and now.
